The practice of acupuncture uses thin needles of different lengths that are inserted into particular points along channels that conduct the body’s energy. These energy streams are called meridians. Acupuncturists are knowledgeable with more than 350 acupoints that are used to clear any blockages along the meridians. They may also use a tiny electronic pulse to increase the stimulation to the tissues, or they may use herbal therapy as well.

Are you aware that New York acupuncture can relieve stress? In Chinese medicine, stress, anxiety, depression or any strong emotion interrupts the smooth flow of energy throughout the body.  According to Chinese medical theory, energy flows through our body through a network of “roads”, almost like a highway system.  Stress, anger, or any intense emotion acts like a traffic jam, blocking the free flow of energy in the body.  For example, many people who are very stressed out complain of upper back, shoulder and neck pain.  This is due to stress which is causing tension in those areas, blocking the free flow of energy, causing pain, tightness, and often leading to headaches.

Unfortunately, the “fight or flight” response, which worked well in caveman days, does not serve us as well if the threat is a demanding boss, nasty co-worker or even a worrisome situation that is not being resolved.  More often than not, the stress in our lives is long-term, and as a result, we find ourselves in a constant state of “fight or flight”, or stress.  Over time, the constant state of stress takes its toll.  Cortisol, the body’s stress hormone elevates, blood pressure increases, and our immune function is suppressed.  Over time, these symptoms become worse and can develop into anxiety, depression, fatigue, digestive problems, and tension headaches.

In a highway system, when there is road construction or an accident, traffic may be also backed up on other secondary roads that feed into or out of the affected area.  This is true in the body, too.  Stress may affect many other parts of the body, most notably digestion, the ability to sleep, pain conditions, and blood pressure. Stress can also aggravate an already troublesome health condition.

The Evidence for Effectiveness of Miami Acupuncture

Miami acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that originated 5,000 years ago from China. Its belief is based on the belief that all living things have a vital energy called “qi” that circulates through the twelve invisible energy lines called meridians on the body. As a rule, each meridian is connected to a certain organ system in the body. If there is an imbalance in the flow of the energy or “qi” though a meridian, this could result to a disease.

New research suggests that acupuncture is the best form of treatment compared to standard medical care alone for headaches. The results of the study shows that acupuncture offers substantial benefits in preventing headaches and improving the quality of life for people who suffer headaches including migraines. Published in the March 15 issue of the British Medical Journal, researchers randomly separated 401 adults aged 18-65 years old with at least two headaches a month into two treatment groups.

This is the largest study completed using acupuncture for headaches. One group received up to 12 acupuncture sessions during a three-month period in addition to standard medical care, and the other group received standard care alone. A year later, researchers found those who received acupuncture visited their physicians 25% less, used 15% less drugs, had 15% less sick days from work compared to the control group, and experienced 22 fewer days with headaches. Although some results may be due to placebo effects, acupuncture has shown in this study to have significant impacts to individuals with headaches.

The exact mechanism of acupuncture is still unknown. According to various studies conducted through NIH funding, there is evidence that there is a release of endorphins and other “pain killers” in the pain site. However, a recent BBC TV has also shown that acupuncture “deactivates the brain” by affecting the area of the brain that governs pain. Scientists at the University College London, Southampton University, and the University of York found that the deep needling deactivated the limbic system, even though most scientists believed that acupuncture activates parts of the brain.

Acupuncture History in China

Acupuncture also known as needle puncture is term invented by Willem Ten Rhyne. He is a Dutch physician visited Nagasaki in Japan during the early parts of the 17th century. The Chinese describes acupuncture with the character “Chen” which literally means to “to prick with a needle”. This happens to be a graphic description of this therapeutic technique.

Early History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture has a clear record of history for more than 2,000 years and there are many claims that it has been practiced in China for more than 4,000 years. People in China believed that acupuncture started during the Stone Age when stone knives were used to drain and puncture abscesses. The Chinese character “Bian” as a matter of fact means “used of a sharp edge stone to treat diseases”. The modern Chinese character “Bi” on the other hand, represents a disease of pain and is most certainly derived from the use of Bian stones for treating painful complaints.

The origin of Chinese medicine has a very fascinating story and acupuncture represents one part of their medical system. The first record of treating and conceptualizing disease dates back from 1500 BC during the Shang dynasty. From that time, tortoise shells with inscriptions were found and it has been though that these were used for divination in the art of healing. Early Chinese medicine bases their philosophy on seeking harmony between the living and their dead ancestors and the good and evil spirits that inhabit their dead that dwell in the earth.

Nowadays, acupuncture is being practiced in all 50 states by over 9,000 practitioners and 4,000 of which are MDs including it in their practices. Acupuncture has shown notable accomplishment in treating many conditions and 15 million Americans have used it as a therapy but in some cases acupuncture remains largely unsupported by the medical establishment. The American Medical Association has been resistant to researching it, as it is based on concepts very different from the Western scientific model.
