Acupuncture for Infertility

When it comes to infertility using TCM or traditional Chinese medicine, both acupuncture and Chinese herbal remedies are important modalities to optimize the treatment. The main reason why acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is used to treat infertility is that acupuncture will restore the balance in the body while Chinese herbs will help rectify the disharmony.

More often than not, TCM practitioners will combine acupuncture and Chinese herbs along with western infertility treatments. Conventional infertility treatments and TCM can be considered after the patient has used up all conventional therapies that will lead to an increased chance of conceiving.

Acupuncture has been practiced for hundreds of centuries in China and other parts of East Asia as a way of treating all types of diseases. This therapy aids in improving circulation through the activation of the central nervous system as neurohormones ad neurotransmitters are released that will help heal a condition.

Acupuncture can also help release endorphins to remove pain and help bring about a feeling of wellness. In the Orient, acupuncture is often used to address a number of health issues and the association between infertility and acupuncture is still being researched there.

Because we are used at the western way of treating maladies, acupuncture may seem a weird way of treating infertility.  But due to its verified efficacy in treating certain cases of infertility, it has become a very popular option for helping infertile couples attain pregnancy. The notion that needles are utilized may seem scary but the fact is it is merely a painless process  and the most that one can feel when needles are inserted in the body is like an ant bite and slight bruising that can be felt by the patient.  The other options for infertility treatment may be more painful and invasive compared to acupuncture.

Infertility treatment using acupuncture works because the body possesses energy channels. These channels travel across different parts of the body as well as to the body surface.  They sometimes develop blockages impeding the flow of energy.  It is with acupuncture that the blockages are removed and this helps energy to flow freely once more throughout the body.  Acupuncture also stimulates the body to help release chemicals into the spine, brain and muscles enabling the body to quickly heal itself.

Before availing yourself for an acupuncture treatment, you first need to consult with your doctor. If the doctor discovers that your infertility is caused by a structural problem, then acupuncture, even when combined with Chinese herbal medicine will not cure your infertility.  Determining the underlying problem of your infertility is important for treating it. If your problem is curable with acupuncture the targets of the treatment will include the liver, spleen and kidney systems since these systems directly affect your reproductive organs. Acupuncture treatment will directly affect the reproductive organs by resolving the problems in those three organs.

TCM practitioners and acupuncturists use herbal supplements to help boost the infertility treatment. The disharmony in the body will be resolved with the patient consuming herbal remedies. Anxiety and stress can be mitigated helping the patient improve his his/her chances of conceiving.

Acupuncture for infertility treatment is most effective when it used to resolve problems such as hormonal imbalances instead of structural abnormalities like blockages of the fallopian tubes which cannot be resolved with acupuncture.  Acupuncture helps to improve and regulate blood circulation to the vital organs and aid in the proper balance of the hormones. This will give the body ample time to recover especially for cases like hormonal imbalance. Acupuncture may be used if all types of conventional therapies are exhausted or if it is used as an adjunct therapy for other conventional treatments.

As mentioned before, herbal supplements are oftentimes accompanied with acupuncture to optimize the treatment however, certain herbs are contraindicated for infertility problems and may hinder the effect of fertility pills; in this regard, it is highly recommended to speak with your doctor first. Acupuncture can also boost the chances of success for females undergoing in vitro fertilization therapy. Since acupuncture can help relax the body and calm the mind, it can play a huge role in successful IVF procedures.

We can see then how acupuncture can be a very important tool for the treatment of infertility. What you need to do is to have your infertility diagnosed to see if its cause is structural in nature or not.  This will allow you to choose what course of treatment is best for your condition. Acupuncture as a type of infertility treatment is worthy of consideration and it may be your way to successful conception.
