Bronchitis Risk Factors

The likelihood of getting bronchitis can oftentimes be seen in a person’s lifestyle and in his medical history. Long-term medical issues affecting the respiratory system including asthma, allergies, cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also up the risk for an individual to develop bronchitis. If a medical condition is responsible for triggering bronchitis, then temporary or acute bronchitis may become a more serious condition that may require a different treatment approach.

There are medical problems that affect the immune system which then can lead to the formation of bronchitis. HIV infections and diabetes are some of these medical problems that have been proven to affect (weaken) the immune system. When the immune system is weakened, the body becomes more vulnerable to infection like the one responsible for bronchitis.

The flu, cold or sinusitis, are pathogen-caused upper-respiratory conditions that can affect the lungs. A person having this medical history is a high risk candidate for getting bronchitis.

Exposure to smog and other types of air pollution as well as smoking and exposure to second-hand smoking can boost the likelihood of those exposed to these factors in developing bronchitis. Secondhand smoke and smoking weaken the body’s ability to expel organisms that can cause bronchitis from the lower respiratory tract.

Working or dwelling in an area with elevated levels of dust, chemicals, smog or air pollution compromises the body’s immune system. Living in a clean air environment, avoiding second hand smoke or quitting smoking can help reduce the chances of a person in developing bronchitis.
