Depression – Coping and Support

The desire to be alone is one of the reasons why depressed people find it hard to cope with their depression. The best way to cope with depression is to talk with your therapist or your doctor.  You can also try to do these tips to help you contend with depression:

Make plans for your day – You can make a list of to-dos for a single day.  Try to make these plans constructive like doing chores, walking outside, enrolling in a yoga class or visiting a friend. Use post-its to remind yourself of what it is you need to do for a specific time.

Find ways to help lessen your stress and be relaxed – If you are interested in Eastern philosophy, you can start doing tai chi, yoga or meditation. Meditation is a great way to clear your mind and learn how to find meaning in your life. Yoga and tai chi, on the other hand, can make your body more flexible and loose enabling you to relax the tight muscles in your body.

Eat healthily – A good diet can help your body gain more energy and make your immune system much stronger. A good lifestyle like proper and adequate sleep everyday, regular exercise and cessation of alcohol intake and illegal drug use improve the health of your mind and body.

Stop making decisions if you are in a depression – When you are depressed you will be unable to have a clear view of things and life and it will impair your ability to decide well.

Do not commit yourself to anything when you are in a state of depression – If you commit on something or somebody and not be able to deliver because of your depression, it might add more to the negative outlook of yourself.

Try to visit friends on a more frequent basis – You can also attend parties with your friends and reunite with family members even if it’s just to say hi to them.

Find a support group for depression – A support group helps a lot since you are with people who are proactively doing something to address their depression. Sharing your problems and sadness with them will help you unburden yourself a little and get encouragement from members of your support group. You can also join an online support group if you find it more convenient.

Read highly inspirational and motivational literature – Inspirational books can help lift     your spirits and help you think about positive thoughts. You can also use the Internet to know more about fascinating information or watch funny and interesting videos on Youtube.

Write – Keep a diary and write down the feelings you have as a way to help release pressure inside you which can eventually feel better afterwards.
