Homeopathic Remedies for Tonsillitis

An inflammation of the tonsils, tonsillitis is usually the result of a bacterial or viral infection. This illness is common in children and for treatment doctors will usually prescribe antibiotics immediately or surgically remove the tonsils to prevent the recurrence of the condition. Also providing relief are natural remedies that can strengthen the immune system to prevent future attacks.

Tonsillitis and Homeopathic Remedies

The person as a whole is treated with homeopathy. This type of treatment uses homeopathic medicines that are chosen only after the patient has been fully examined. In the case of chronic conditions the patient’s medical history and predisposition to tonsillitis are considered.

For chronic and acute tonsillitis, a homeopath may recommend a formula made up of Kali muriaticum, Kali bichromat, Hepar sulph, Calc. Phos, and belladonna.

For chronic enlargement of the tonsils and sore throat related to tonsillitis, lycopodium may be administered.

For signs and symptoms such as pain extending to the ears, red, swollen tonsils and pain, and for rough throat, Phytolacca may be administered.

When there is a lot of swelling involved in chronic or acute tonsillitis, Kali muriaticum can be of help.

At the beginning of a tonsillitis attack when the patient can have aches and chills in the limbs and back as well as a severe headache, Guaiacum can be used.

Homeopaths use Hepar sulphur for throbbing headaches and pain especially when an abscess may be developing.

Tonsillitis Herbal Formulas

For the strengthening of the immune system and the lowering of fever, echinacea, yarrow, garlic, elderflowers myrrh, chamomile, sage, Lime flowers and wild indigo can be used.

Mullein, marshmallow, and comfrey can be used to soothe painful tonsils.

An herbalist may use agrimony, elderflowers, or raspberry leaves to clear mucous and catarrh.

Pain, headaches, and fever can be reduced if you gargle with a mixture of chamomile and lavender.

To address a bout of tonsillitis, drink a mild tea made up of yarrow leaves, peppermint, and elderflowers each day.

Tonsillitis and other throat infections can be treated by garlic. Drinking a garlic and onion soup is recommended for the treatment of tonsillitis. You can include spices such as mustard seed, horseradish, and ginger to the soup.

Persimmon and blackberry root are high in tannins and have been traditionally used as a tonsillitis remedy.

Immunity can be boosted with Echinacea combined with goldenseal. This combination makes for a potent immune stimulant, antibiotic, and antiseptic.

Another powerful cure for tonsillitis is Black nightshade.

Along with herbal and homeopathic remedies, gargle with a half a teaspoon of salt to one cup of tepid water or saline solution to reduce swelling and remove mucous. The zinc in zinc lozenges can help boost the immune system. To help recover from tonsillitis and boost the immune system, take Bee propolis as it has known anti-viral qualities.
