Managing Asthma Naturally With TCM & Acupuncture

Treating asthma using has been practiced for many ages in Northeast and Southeast Asia. With its origins in Chinese culture, acupuncture is a holistic type of treatment that not only addresses that symptoms of asthma but goes to the root of the problem and treats it accordingly. While western medicine can effectively help resolve the symptomatic issues of asthma, and in serious instances, can even save a person’s life, it still has not come up with a permanent cure for it.

One of the reasons for this is that the reason for asthma is beyond the symptoms of breathing difficulties, sneezing, coughing, and wheezing. It really is more about a person’s overall health most especially the ability of his immune system to repel allergic reactions that trigger asthma.

Though generally used to improve wellness, acupuncture can help strengthen the body to withstand the day to day hazards of life such as pollution. The heart of acupuncture therapy comes from tens of centuries of traditional Chinese medicine practices of health and healing. Acupuncture is grounded on the idea that the body is one electrically interconnected entity. Based on Chinese medicine theory, illnesses such as asthma, comes from the abnormal flow of vital energy known as chi which travels throughout the body using pathways known as meridians. The chi from time to time encounters a blockage in a meridian and it is the job of the Healer or “sifu” to identify the location of the blockage. When chi flows abnormally, the result is a disorder or a disease.

It takes a highly skilled “sifu” to remove the blockage in the meridian. He gently inserts ultra fine needles beneath predetermined acupuncture points to bring back the proper flow of chi to restore balance in the body. If performed in the right way, chi can flow to the lungs to tonify the respiratory system to help repel episodes of asthma. A balanced flow of energy makes the body healthy and strong and helps it ward off diseases.

Most acupuncture patients will experience positive results after a number of acupuncture sessions. But if you want long term benefits, you may need to keep coming for treatment until your asthma is entirely cured. Acupuncture can be optimally effective if it is combined with your regular asthma treatment under the watchful eye of your doctor.

Based on the view of ancient Chinese medicine, the flow and balance of chi not only concerns the body. The environment needs to be considered as well since if, say, your workplace has bad or poor you’re your health and that of your other co-workers will suffer as well and it may lead to work-related conditions such as asthma.
