Acupuncture for Depression

Depression plagues around 8 million Americans each year many of them ending up killing themselves. A lot of individuals are now becoming more and more dependent on addictive and risky drugs to help regulate their levels of serotonin in the body. Because of this, the symptoms of depression are merely masked and this leads to the recurrence of the condition.

A totally different type of alternative treatment that is very effective and entirely safe to use for depression is acupuncture. This treatment is significantly much better than drugs since instead of just suppressing the symptoms, acupuncture addresses both the symptoms and the underlying imbalances that cause depression.

Acupuncture for treating pain is widely known but its ability to treat mood disorders is increasingly becoming more known each year due to its very high rates of success.

How Does Acupuncture Treat Depression?

One of the primary factors causing depression is stress and according to TCM or traditional Chinese medicine, stress is indeed the number one cause of depression. A force known as vital energy or Qi flows in the body. This flow is what gives us good health and strength.  Sometimes, this is obstructed by stress resulting in the symptoms of depression. Acupuncture is then used to remove the obstruction to restore the free flow of energy leading to the treatment of the symptoms of depression and the relaxation of the body.

Patients who have tried acupuncture have shown significant results after three to six sessions of treatment. Usually, depression comes along with symptoms like fatigue, insomnia and anxiety. The aim of acupuncture is to relieve all these symptoms.

Treating depression with acupuncture has resulted in different feedbacks; however, clinical studies have shown that people affected with depression can look forward to encouraging results. To fight depression, acupuncture helps release “feel good” chemicals in the body called endorphins in the central nervous system. They help the patient attain a relaxed body and a calm mind thereby helping neutralize the effects of depression.

These endorphins contribute to the balancing of the mood and the enhancement of the level of energy of the patient. Acupuncture is especially potent when combined with a healthy lifestyle and diet since if used as a stand alone treatment for depression acupuncture alone may not provide the patient with maximum results.

Acupuncture can also help you reduce the dosage of your medication over the course of time as it helps relieve the symptoms when you combine it with drug therapy.  For a lot of people, acupuncture has proven to be an entirely safe and very effective modality for depression. Unlike medications, acupuncture can bring back balance n the body and can even entirely cure you of your depression by the fact that it treats the underlying roots of your condition.
