Acupuncture for Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction in men or women means they have a problem with sexual response or desire. This condition encompasses a wide array of problems. For women, sexual dysfunction can mean pain with sexual intercourse and spasms of the vagina. In men, they may mean delayed ejaculation and erectile dysfunction (ED). Difficulties in libido or sexual desire and response can be a problem for both sexes

Erectile dysfunction is likely to occur in men ages 65 and higher although this condition is not considered a natural part of the aging process. About 44% of women suffering from sexual dysfunction say that their primary problem is lowered sexual desire. Sexual dysfunction can be due to physical or psychological factors or both.

Symptoms and Signs

-Vaginal dryness
-Problem experiencing an orgasm
-Lower urinary tract symptoms
-Loss or weak sexual desire
-Pain during sex
-Inability to attain or maintain an erection – erectile dysfunction
-Delayed or premature ejaculation (men)

What Causes Sexual Dysfunction?

Some people experience sexual dysfunction on a long-term or temporary basis. Some of its causes may include:

-Chronic cardiovascular diseases like coronary heart disease and diabetes
-Stressful life situations
-Anxiety, depression and other psychological conditions
-Drug abuse
-Hormone imbalances
-Ingesting prescription drugs such as antidepressants
-For men, being 65 years of age and above

Choices of Treatment

Alternative treatments can treat sexual dysfunction resulting from anxiety, depression, hormone imbalance or weak circulation. Make sure you go for treatment to a licensed or experienced practitioner of alternative therapies and inform your physician about the medicines, supplements and herbs that your are using.  Pharmaceutical medications have a lot of side effects and can interfere with certain herbal remedies. Both sexes can find treatment with alternative therapies.

Herbs

Herbs help tone and strengthen the body’s systems. Like all types of therapy, you need to cooperate with your physician to diagnose your condition prior to starting on your treatment. Herbs used can include alcohol extracts (tinctures), glycerine extracts (glycerites) and dried herbal extracts such as teas, powders and capsules. Prepare tea with a teaspoonful of herbs mixed in hot water. For flowers or leaves, mix for 5 to 10 minutes, while for roots, mix for around 10 to 20 minutes for roots. You can take tinctures alone or combined with other herbs. Drink 2 to 4 cups a day.

An herbal remedy known as Vitex agnus castus or Chaste tree aids your body into producing hormones normally. You need to take this remedy for a year to a year and a half for it to work.

For women

-To help enhance arousal, arginine combined with yohimbe can be used. Yohimbe needs to be taken only upon the supervision of your physician.
-Panax ginseng or Korean red ginseng – this is good for menopausal women to enhance their sexual arousal. As a stimulant, ginseng should not be used by people who suffer from hormone-sensitive cancers like prostate or breast cancer such as breast or prostate cancer, bleeding disorders, heart disease, schizophrenia, autoimmune diseases, and insomnia. Ginseng can interfere with the effects of certain drugs like insulin and blood thinners.
-Trunera diffusa (damaina), ginkgo, ginseng and arginine – these as well as certain mineral and vitamins contained in a formula known as Argin-Max demonstrated their validity in treating female sexual dysfunction. Arginine is contraindicated for people taking diabetes drugs and blood thinners or suffering from liver disease, kidney disease and high blood pressure.

For men:

-Pausinystalia yohimbe or just yohimbe – this herb’s active ingredient is yohimbine hydrochloride which is a substance contained in certain prescription drugs used to resolve erectile dysfunction.  You should only use yohimbe under the guidance of your doctor. High doses can be dangerous and can interfere with a number of drugs. People with certain health conditions should not take this herb.
-Pygeum africanum and Serenoa repens (Saw palmetto) – they may be effective for sexual problems caused by prostate disease. Saw palmetto should not be used if you are can taking blood-thinners and only should be used under a physician’s supervision.
-Panax ginseng or Korean red ginseng – this can treat erectile dysfunction. A double-blind study had subjects with ED improving their condition after 2 months taking this remedy. Ginseng is contraindicated for people with prostate cancer, bleeding disorders, heart disease, schizophrenia, autoimmune diseases and insomnia. Ginseng interferes with certain drugs like insulin and blood thinners.
-Lepidium meyenii or Maca – this herb is super effective in improving the sexual desire in men.  Maca is indigenous in Peru and has been used there for thousands of years for treating male sexual dysfunction

-Ginkgo biloba – helps improves sexual function and boosts circulation. Ginkgo should not be taken by people using anticoagulants and other blood-thinning medications drugs.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture – these therapies for 4,000 years has been used to treat male and female sexual dysfunctions.  Clinical studies demonstrate that acupuncture may improve the function of the endocrine, circulatory and reproductive system. A lot of people utilize TCM and acupuncture to help regulate hormonal imbalances.
